What makes something an Heirloom?

February 21, 2022 by 1 Comment

I recently discovered a fashion line, Heirloom Amalgam, that reimagines the definition of vintage ready-to-wear. The second I heard the name of the brand, I knew I’d want something. Perhaps I’ve been re-programmed as a shopper now to focus on sustainability and thoughtful spending. So, I find shopping synonymous with seeking out modern heirlooms–but that wasn’t always the case.

I’ve always erred on the side of over-accessorizing to showcase my personal style. I blame grade school for that fact because I wore a uniform. At age 15, a carefully selected stacked bracelets could oftentimes make or break a Monday morning look. So, when I first started shopping for myself, I craved excess. And that typically meant investing in eye-catching costume jewelry or disposable but conversation-starting fashion.

In my thirties, my mindset has completely changed. Even as a boy mom, before I buy anything, I ask myself if it is heirloom-worthy. But what does that even mean?

What is an heirloom?

Like “beauty,” the definition of an heirloom is arguably somewhat subjective. Technically, a valuable object that has belonged to a family for several generation is an heirloom. But don’t we decide what to re-purpose or showcase from the generations that came before us? And don’t we choose what’s valuable enough to purchase now knowing that we will inevitably pass it down later?

To me, an heirloom is a piece that can withstand seasonal trends and decades of wear. But that doesn’t mean an heirloom can’t be set aside for many years before being rediscovered or revamped. My engagement ring was reset this year to showcase not only the stone my husband sourced to propose to me but also the stone his Zaidy sourced for his Bubbie many years ago. That new toi et moi ring now imbues meaning into my amalgamation of accessories every day. Objectively, it’s the most exceptional heirloom I’ll ever own.

I also believe that heirlooms can be self-purchased. Truly, I believe that heirlooms are the foundation of our wardrobes. Heirlooms are arguably the material manifestations of love and desire with staying power.

There’s just something about a universally flattering unisex piece of outerwear. To me, the right jackets will always look great both now and later.

Customized real gold & diamond pieces also carry so much meaning for the wearer that even the trends are worthy investments. I layer initials that represent who I am and who I love. So, to me, that means they’ll be important forever.

When cared for properly, leather handbags can also be carried by more than one in their lifetime. I will attest to the fact that the right Chanel really can complete more than a decade of looks.

Classic gold bangles have clearly made a comeback too. But, I now have my eye on the pieces that fewer people have, like this Marlo Laz cuff that calls for good fortune.

I also love how classic silk scarves can be tied onto purse handles, worn as crop tops, and hung up in home offices as works of art. In other words, they’ll always work…l’dor v’dor.

There’s also something about emeralds. The rich green color will never lose its luster and I have a feeling our grandchildren will be wearing ear cuffs too (but even if they’re not…this one would be worth it).

And then there’s the argument for art. While art is most notably the most valuable investment many of us will ever make as young professionals, it will take many of us years to fully take the plunge. For us, our art collection started with the pieces that were passed down. So, it’s time for us to think about how we’ll pay it forward.
